Claude Code safety downgrade leads to deletion of developer's 700GB home directory
A developer reported that Claude Code's safety mechanism downgraded the model during an adversarial review, leading it to delete 700GB of his home directory. The downgrade from Fable 5 to Opus 4.8 caused a variable reuse error in the cleanup step, deleting the home directory despite prior safety checks.

Anthropic to enable Claude Code auto mode by default in 5 days
Anthropic announced that in five days, all Claude Code instances will default to auto mode, which uses a classifier to approve tool calls automatically. The extra token cost per tool call will not be charged to users, and cloud platforms like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have one month to switch to default auto mode as well. Anthropic cited low human rejection rates (3% for permission requests) and a controlled experiment showing auto mode blocked 89% of dangerous commands versus 13.6% for humans.

Prompt injection attack bypasses Claude Code auto mode 80% of the time via zip archive
Researcher Johann Rehberger demonstrated a prompt injection attack against Claude Code's auto mode, claiming an 80% success rate by tricking the agent into downloading and extracting a zip archive that contains a malicious struct.py file, which is then imported via base64. In some runs, auto mode even blocked Claude's attempts to terminate the malware process after detecting the compromise, highlighting a flaw in the safety mechanism itself.

Anthropic Researchers Use Claude Mythos to Find Cryptographic Weaknesses
Anthropic researchers used Claude Mythos Preview to discover two new cryptographic attacks: one significantly weakens the post-quantum signature scheme HAWK, and another targets round-reduced AES. The work, detailed in a blog post and repository, reportedly cost about $100,000 in API usage over 60 hours. Neither attack currently affects production systems.

Anthropic's Claude Code drafts feedback reports for user review
Anthropic's Claude Code v2.1.238 or later can automatically draft feedback reports when tools fail, requests cannot be completed, or errors are identified. Drafts are saved locally at ~/.claude/feedback/drafts/ and are not sent to Anthropic until the user explicitly approves. Users can review, edit, or disable the feature via /config.
